Vitamin B3: Niacin and Niacinamide

Niacin or Vitamin B3 is comes in two forms: niacin (or nicotinic acid), or niacinamide (or nicotinamide). It was renamed from “nicotinic” to “niacin” due to the confusion with “nicotine” in cigarettes. There is an overlap between niacin and nictotine, as demonstrated by the use of niacin for addictions and anxiety.

Almost all multi-vitamins contain niacinamide, but not niacin, due to complaints about the niacin flush. The amount of niacinamide added to most multi-vitamins is very small compared to the dosages recommended by Hoffer and his colleages. Niacinamide is not always equivalent to niacin. See the information below for more information.
